with an emphasis on grammar
About the teacher
Ahoj, I’m Vladimír, the teacher of these courses.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Bohemian Studies from Charles University in Prague.
I am not a native Czech speaker and I learnt Czech already as an adult. The path along which I lead my students, I’ve walked myself. I probably know all intricacies which foreigners come across when learning Czech, and I love to share with them the clues and tips that I at some point created for myself.
I reckon grammar is the foundation of all language skills. It’s a kind of a skeleton, onto which we later attach the meat of the vocabulary and the appearance consisting in the ability to express oneself in different styles and registers. I believe that in the beginning of language learning grammar should be taught to the maximum possible extent, even at the expense of vocabulary expansion. Once the knowledge grammar is solidified, development of vocabulary will go much faster and will make more sense to the student.
At the lesson I speak mostly Czech. Students begin to speak right away and are trying to understand the meaning of words from the context. This is how it has to be. After all our goal is to immerse ourselves into the target language as deep as possible. Certain rules or nuances, however, are easier to understand, especially for beginners, if explained in the student’s mother tongue. In the case of my students it can be Russian, English or Portuguese.
Language command, needs and learning approach vary from group to group. Hence I adapt my lessons for each group to ensure that we learn something that interests the students and skip any material that the students have already mastered. The main thing is that the study should not be boring.
One can learn Czech. Let’s do it together!
